POLLINATING COMMUNITY

PARK(ing) Day / Back to School Block Party in Washington Heights

Friday, 9/15 1-4pm

WHEELS SCHOOL STREET

W. 182nd St. between Amsterdam and Audubon Avenues

Join us for a community open street activation that transforms the entire block between the school buildings of WHEELS and I.S. 143 to demonstrate the need for a healthier, safer and more engaging streetscape for learning and to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards, landscape architects and planners.

W. 182nd Street will become a green learning street to promote community and environmental wellness to bring awareness of the elementary student-led initiative of a “Clean Air Green Corridor”. The event will set the stage as a School Street model, with a pop-up park and educational-related activities and games. This event is in collaboration with Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) and Futures Ignite.

PARK(ing) Day is an annual international event where residents, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform curbside parking spots into public spaces. Activations often take the form of creating temporary parklets for community use and providing opportunities for art and civic engagement. The mission of these happenings is to call attention to the importance of urban open space and generate a dialogue about the benefits of public green space to elevate the health and quality of urban life for the surrounding neighborhood.
